Maximum Security's Trainer Among 27 Charged in International Doping Scheme

Haskill Invitational winner Maximum Security is trained by Jason Servis, who according to prosecutors covertly administered performance-enhancing drugs to that horse and "virtually all of the racehorses under his control."

The four-year-old colt also won last year's Florida Derby.  His most recent win was the $10 million Saudi Cup.

The horse came in first at the 2019 Kentucky Derby as well, but was later disqualified for interference.

His owner, Gary West, has now moved Maximum Security to Bob Baffert's camp after firing Servis.

"What actually happened to the horses amounted to nothing less than abuse," William Sweeney, assistant director-in-charge of the FBI's New York office, said at a news conference.

US prosecutors said 27 trainers, veterinarians, drug distributors and others were indicted on Monday.

The charges also allege Servis conspired with a veterinarian to make the drug test appear as a false positive for a different substance. The substances allegedly administered can cause many health complications in horses, including fractured legs, heart problems and even death, due to overexertion and lessening of pain sensitivity.

West issued a statement shortly after the indictments came to light.

From ESPN:

"Yesterday, Jason Servis, a trainer we have used for 5 years, was indicted on multiple charges regarding using an illegal substance in horses. This news is extremely disturbing and disappointing. Therefore we will be moving all our horses from Jason Servis as soon as arrangements can be made with other trainers. Maximum Security will be sent to Bob Baffert."
