How Much Tax Do I Have to Pay on Michigan Sports Betting Winnings?

The Dass Lawfirm tells WXYZ Detroit that sports bettors will be required to pay upwards of 9% on any winnings in the state of Michigan.  If true, this would give sportsbooks licensed outside the state but accessible to Michigan residents a tremendous advantage as they do not report taxes to government agencies.  Nor do local bookies for that matter.

It is still unclear when Michigan sportsbooks will be up and running.  Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bi-partisan bill into law earlier this month to allow retail and mobile sports wagering. It could bring in nearly $20 million a year, according to the Michigan Department of the Treasury.
