The New York Mets along with Time Warner/Road Runner and the Project Safe Childhood Task Force in the Eastern District of New York, are hosting an Internet Safety Awareness Day at Shea Stadium on September 6, 2008.

The program is one the New York Mets and Major League Baseball supports wholly. They along with Time Warner , the largest cable Internet provider in New York, realize to dangers children encounter while using the Internet. According the Project Safe Childhood officials, 50 percent of all children are approached in a negative way on the Internet.

Time Warner and Project Safe Childhood officials will be handing out baseball cards with a New York Mets Logo on one side and Internet safety tips on the other. A program with the Mets mascot, Time Warner's Road Runner and Netsmartz's Clicky will also be presented.

Many major sports teams and Internet providers are realizing the mass audiences they can reach during one of these events. A spokesperson for Project Safe Childhood says that children look to role models and peers to help them make decisions on how to conduct themselves and make it easier to report suspicious activity in online chatrooms and on websites.

One of the participants in the Task Force is Queens County District Attorney Richard Brown, whose office is a leading prosecutor of online sport books. His office is also a leader in the arrest of online pedophiles and those who trade in child pornography. Along with the task force, he maintains that using the Internet for criminal activity offers no protection for criminals.
