NHL Commish: All in on Sports Betting as Best Thing to Drive Fan Engagement

Speaking at this year's Global Gaming Expo (G2E) Wednesday, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said that his position on legalized sports betting has evolved and now he is all-in on the concept as the best way to enhance fan engagement.

"Is it a criticism to evolve?" he asked.

Bettman spoke of betting at arenas such as Madison Square Garden and the need to have 5G Internet widely available throughout the venue in order to do so.

He predicted the next media deal for the National Hockey League will have a multi screen approach. 

"Gen Z is watching the game on TV with their laptop open and are (also) making live prop bets on their phone”, he noted.

Bettman also talked about integrity concerns with legal betting.

“Our guys play to win and I don’t think they pay attention to the lines," he said with a degree of confidence.
