Lawmakers in Iowa this year passed a bill that allows sports betting throughout the state, both in casinos and via one's mobile device.

The first sportsbook is expected to open in early September in conjunction with the start of college football and the NFL.  Iowa's dive into the sports betting waters comes a year after the US Supreme Court ruled to abolish decades of prohibition, thus paving the way for all states to legally offer the activity.  But individual states, in an effort to abide by the previous mandates, imposed their own laws banning gambling on sports.  As a result, most states must now amend their own laws.

Iowa is an attractive state to have in a company's portfolio, however, William Hill already has a strong foothold here.

The state offers an attractive tax structure when compared to others already offering sports gambling.  6.75% tax on sports betting revenue, a $45,000 licensing fee with a $10,000 renewal, and up to two skins per licensee.

Sports betting websites already accessible in Iowa stand to benefit from free advertising coupled with restrictions on the regulated books.

Case in point, regulated in-state sportsbooks will be prohibited from taking prop bets on games that feature the Iowa college teams such as the Hawkeyes and Cyclones.

Should Draftkings opt to enter the Iowa market, customers will need to first register in-person at the casino/retail partner Draftkings teams up with to gamble real money on their mobile devices.

Customers must also be 21 or over.  All sites currently accessible to those in Iowa permit players 18 and up.
