Even though most of the offshore gambling sites were offering odds throughout the season on Game of Thrones and even the NJ sportsbook apps took wagers on the Oscars, the Garden State appears to have its limits.

As the state credited for getting decades long prohibition of sports betting overturned in the US Supreme Court, some pundits have claimed the state missed out on a potential windfall from Game of Thrones wagering.

Proof is in the pudding so to speak.

From NJ.com:

The Oscars betting handle, which in lay terms is the amount of money people wagered, was $747,696. The amount of revenue sportsbooks and casinos generated from that amount was $182,517.

The early returns – both from a profitability and overall operations standpoint – seem to indicate that allowing legalized gambling on entertainment is a smart move. If there is a concern, limit wagering to major events such as the Grammys, Tonys, and Emmys initially. Entertainment wagering has been done in Europe for decades. There is no reason why it can’t be successful here, where the boom in popularity is exemplified with wagering on a wide array of Game Of Thrones propositions.
