The Status of Sports Betting in New York State
New York opened sportsbooks in casino locations within the state in 2019, but all in mostly sparsely populated regions. Mobile sports betting from businesses operating within the state of New York was only available from websites licensed outside the states until the first week of January 2022. The in-state licensed books do not take bets on New York college teams. This includes the Syracuse Orange in College Basketball.
Additionally, the tax for those sportsbooks based in New York is greater than 50%, thus making it especially difficult to offer competitive bonuses and lines. In fact, the tax on winnings is 24% federal with New York residents having 8.82% withheld for winnings over $5000. Sites like BetOnline do not report winnings.
Promos available to those on the New York state regulated sites are limited and less competitive compared to those offered by websites accessible to state residents and visitors that are licensed outside the United States.
