After months of testing, online sports betting has finally gone live in West Virginia.
The casino operator Delaware North launched its BetLucky.com online and mobile app on Thursday. You do not have to be a resident of West Virginia in order to play on the app but you must be physically located within the state's borders. West Virginia casinos are strategically located to attract those from neighboring states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and Virginia. Anyone 21 or older can place bets online via their mobile device or laptop.
“We think West Virginians and visitors to the Mountain State are going to love how easy it is to register and use the app,” said Luisa Woods, vice president of marketing for Delaware North’s gaming division.
Delaware North runs the newly opened retail sportsbooks at the Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack, in Wheeling, and Mardi Gras Casino & Resort near Charleston. Though these were the last of the five retail sportsbooks to open, Delaware North has beaten the others onto the Web.
DraftKings has partnered with Penn National and the Hollywood Casino in Charles Town to provide a sports betting app to debut shortly.
While the 10% tax on operators is low in comparison to states like Pennsylvania (36%), the burdensome nature is easy to see in their initial bonus offering, get paid 2X your first bet, but only to $20. By comparison offshore sportsbooks tend to offer bonuses up to $1000, even more on occasion.
