With all the recent talk in the affiliate community related to Apple's intention to block cookie tracking from third parties via its Safari browser, now comes word that Mozilla Firefox has an even more aggressive plan in the works.

Firefox is going to start clamping down big time on brands’ ad-tracking that tries to stalk you around the web, writes Andy Meek of BGR.

While privacy concerns appear to be at the heart of Apple's decision to block tracking, Mozilla says its move is more tied to functionality and improving site load performance.

“Long page load times are detrimental to every user’s experience on the web,” the company’s blog explains, noting that third party interferences tends to slow down the load process. “For that reason, we’ve added a new feature in Firefox Nightly that blocks trackers that slow down page loads. We will be testing this feature using a shield study in September.  If we find that our approach performs well, we will start blocking slow-loading trackers by default in Firefox 63.”

Mozilla does cite privacy concerns for its launch of a new feature to strip ad tracking cookies.  Currently the feature is being tested by a limited number of users, specifically on Firefox Nightly.

“This is about more than protecting users — it’s about giving them a voice,” the company says. “Some sites will continue to want user data in exchange for content, but now they will have to ask for it, a positive change for people who up until now had no idea of the value exchange they were asked to make.”
