Status of Sports Betting in Maine

The US Supreme Court in May ruled sports betting to be legal in all 50 states provided each amends its current laws.  Not all will.

Maine is likely a ways off.

“I would say we were behind the 8-ball and that’s not uncommon for Maine to be that way,” said State Rep. Donald G. Marean, R-Hollis, who also serves as vice-chair of the U.S. Trotting Association.

Following the high court’s decision, Milton Champion, executive director of the state’s Gambling Control Board, advised there is currently no sports-betting legislation pending in Maine and will not be until at least 2019.

Current Maine Law for Sports Betting

Maine lacks any law prohibiting sports betting, only adhering to previous federal law until the Supreme Court abolished said prohibition back in May.  There are also no laws on the books prohibiting online gambling explicitly.
