Both trainer and owners are veterans of Preakness wins: John Servis with Smarty Jones in 2004, Cash Is King the following year with Afleet Alex. Both are also Mid-Atlantic-based, so you have to think a win here would be particularly sweet. Diamond King’s only start in a graded stakes race was the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs back in November, and he lost the rider in the early going, so that’s not going to help your handicapping. Over the winter the horse was moved from trainer Butch Reid to Servis; in his two starts in the new barn, Diamond King was third in the Grade 3 Swale and won the local prep, the Federico Tesio at Laurel last month. He’s got plenty of stamina in his pedigree; he’s another that likes to go to the front, which could make things interesting early on. If the rain does come in Baltimore, he’ll be making his first start on an off track. He gets a serious upgrade in the saddle with Hall of Famer Castellano on board for the first time.
