$800 Bet on UMBC Win Nets Bettor $16K

UMBC's historic win over No. 1 Virginia was the second-largest upset by point-spread standards since the NCAA tournament field expanded in 1985.  The Retrieves could go onto pay out even more should they beat Kansas State Sunday evening as a +10 underdog.

CG Technology in Las Vegas offered the Retrievers at 20-1 and took an $800 money-line bet that paid a net $16,000.  It was not immediately known whether any bets were placed on UMBC online and how much may have been won as a result.

UMBC became the first number 16 seed to beat a number 1 seed and the odds-on favorite to win the Championship title to boot.

Maryland-Baltimore County stunned the college basketball world by pulling off the most shocking upset in sports history, let alone Men’s College Basketball.

But UMBC didn’t just beat Virginia, it dominated throughout the second half. Senior guard Jairus Lyles scored 28 points and the Retreivers cruised to an easy victory before racing off the floor together in their yellow-and-black uniforms with one finger pointed toward the sky.

“These are the moments that you dream of,” Lyles said.

UMBC would pay $500,000 on a $100 bet to win the 2018 NCAA Men's College Basketball Championship.
