PokerStars Looks to Capitalize on Artificial Intelligence

The world’s largest real money online poker company, PokerStars, has begun seeking out researchers involved in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), according to a report featured on PokerNews.com.  That website speculates that this initiative could eventually result in exciting new games on the website.

From PokerNews.com:

Recently published advertisements suggest an international recruitment effort hiring for roles in both the company's London and Dublin offices.

The vacancies, which are available at different levels such as "Poker AI Research Engineer" and "Graduate Poker AI Research Engineer," offer potential staff the "challenge of researching the application of AI in one of the largest gaming communities in the world." PokerStars says that the to-be-hired staff will "be working on a number of high end products [PokerStars] wishes to bring to market and how AI interacts with this to help [PokerStars] learn from and analyse strategies developed through self-play." PokerNews.com speculates that the new staffing roles will focus on game innovations as opposed to the company’s Game Integrity focus.  PokerStars has previously stated that poker is a game meant to be played between humans as opposed to human beings versus bots. Earlier this year an AI beat a handful of top poker players to win $800,000.

Libratus, developed by a Carnegie Mellon professor of computer science and one of his students, laid waste to real live poker pros as part of a tournament that took place during the month of January.
