Sports Illustrated’s Chris Johnson says not to worry about the Crimson Tide’s low recruiting ranking this upcoming season. Oddsmakers don’t seem to care either as they have the Tide winning OVER 10.5 regular season games at 1/2 odds in 2017.
Johnson points out that Alabama has signed signed a team that finished outside the the top five of Scout.com’s team rankings only once since 2008 but as of it Wednesday counted only five commitments and ranked 47th in Scout.com’s 2018 team rankings, below schools such as Kansas, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, Boston College and Iowa State.
Will it matter?
The Crimson Tide’s class doesn’t look great in full right now, and that won’t change overnight, but they’re beginning to generate some momentum on the trail, even with Tuesday’s swing-and-miss on five-star running back Zamir White. Alabama has secured verbal commitments from three players just this month: Four-star Crisp County (Ga.) High linebacker Quay Walker, four-star St. Paul’s Episcopal (Ala.) School cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis and Nation Ford (S.C.) High’s Skyler DeLong, the nation’s top punter.
The Tide coaching staff, however, has witnessed substantial turnover during the off season and they will enter 2017 without a designated starting quarterback (at least as of this writing).
Alabama has lost its offensive coordinator (Lane Kiffin), his one-game replacement (Steve Sarkisian), its offensive line coach (Mario Cristobal) and its wide receivers coach (Billy Napier).
