The West Virginia Mountaineers are coming off an 8-5 season a year ago but the team has not been a contender in the Big 12 since moving from the Big East in 2012.
The pressure is on head coach Dana Holgorsen this season to turn the Mountaineers in to serious contenders. West Virginia returns most of their offensive starters from last season but they do have to replace Big 12 rushing champion Wendell Smallwood. It should be Rushel Shell taking his spot this season.
The bad news for West Virginia is that most of the starters on defense from last season are gone and also gone are all of the coaches in the secondary.
The Mountaineers might be better on paper than they were a year ago but the schedule is much tougher in 2016. The creampuffs that padded West Virginia’s schedule last year are gone as instead of facing Liberty, Georgia Southern and Maryland the Mountaineers get Missouri, BYU and Youngstown State.
It is unlikely the Mountaineers will match last season’s win total and it might be tough just for this team to reach six wins and become bowl eligible and unless the Mountaineers win at least eight games it could be the last season for Holgorsen with West Virginia.
