Odds to Win 2009 Kentucky Oaks

While everyone is talking about Saturday's Kentucky Derby main event, let's not forget about Friday's Kentucky Oaks. The 2009 Kentucky Oaks promises to be a big draw thanks to the favored filly running, Rachel Alexandra. She's listed as a -400 favorite to win at BetUS.com.

A four-time winner of the Kentucky Oaks, Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has three-eighths of the field for today's 135th running, the Louisville Courier reports.

From the Courier:

"I'm going to put Be Fair over there by the (track) kitchen, I'm going to put Tweeter right here (at the backstretch gap) and we're going to tag around and keep barreling so we can hold off that monster," Lukas said.

Gabby's Golden Gal trainer Bob Baffert called her the "freak of all freaks" and compared her to Olympic-champion sprinter Usain Bolt. Aimee Dollase, assistant trainer for Nan, called her "tremendous." Even Rachel Alexandra's own connections have gotten in on the action.

"She's unbelievable," jockey Calvin Borel said. "I don't know how good she is, to tell you the truth."

Unlike the Kentucky Derby, Rachel Alexendra's odds of winning at -400 make her a strong favorite. The Derby, on the other hand, has a competitive slate and no "stand out" favorite.

The Kentucky Oaks is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred fillies staged annually in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. The race currently covers 1⅛ miles (1811 m) at Churchill Downs; carry 121 pounds (54.9 kg). The Kentucky Oaks is held on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby each year. The winner gets a $500,000 dollar purse and a garland of lilies.
