The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has confirmed it banned Irish bookmaker Boylesports from featuring an advertisement depicting the crucifixion.

The ad shows a hand being nailed to the crucifix with the message “Nailed On Bonus” and a sign hanging from the nailed hand with the amount that can be obtained (between 5-25 quid).

Complaints were filed against the bookmaker, whose chief rival in Ireland, Paddy Power, is routinely reprimanded by the ASA.

The watchdog group issued the following statement:

“We considered the offence was likely to be particularly strongly felt by those of the Christian faith at Easter, when the imagery would have a particularly strong resonance. We considered that the ad was likely to cause serious offence and concluded that it was therefore in breach of the Code”.
