It’s all about the rain. Exaggerator beat the rest of the pack at the Santa Anita Derby, seemingly relishing the sloppy track.
"The setup is one where we could get a pretty decent soaking rain," said Dan Hofmann, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Baltimore/Washington forecast office.
By Wednesday, rain chances had diminished from 100 percent to 70 percent, an indication, not that it’s going to end up being dry but rather the rain may not be quite as heavy as originally anticipated. Current forecasts call for a half inch of the wet stuff.
Exaggerator’s biggest obstacle won’t be a dry track but rather one that features Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness Stakes favorite Nyquist running on it.
Of the races that Nyquist was not part of the field, Exaggerator has four victories to go with a second- and a third-place finish. The four that featured Nyquist, Exaggerator failed to finish first.
