The folks from BetUS.com have released their own 2009 US Masters betting predictions. The event is one of the most bet on of the year especially due to the lucrative payout potential during these times of economic hardship.
"It's a given that Tiger Woods is the favorite to win his fifth Masters championship. Even if Woods was still hobbling around on a bad knee he'd still be the favorite," BetUS.com points out. "On two healthy legs, and coming off a come-from-behind win in the Arnold Palmer Invitational two weeks ago, Woods is a big +180 favorite on the golf odds."
But in that sense, Tiger Woods is no different than the New York Yankees.
"The Yankees will almost always be listed as the favorite to win the World Series at the start of the season," points out Gambling911.com's Don Shapiro. "This has to do with star power more than anything else."
And just because Tiger Woods is the favorite doesn't mean the folks from BetUS.com think he will win.
"For most bettors, repeat contenders likely start and stop with Woods and Mickelson. (But) If you're looking for a real repeat candidate, beyond the obvious of course, don't forget about Mike Weir and Vijay Singh. Weir, the 2003 Masters champ, is a +4500 underdog this week, while Singh, the 2000 Masters champ and two-time PGA Championship winner, is a +3000 underdog."
And then there is the sentimental choice with the rather lucrative payout potential.
"One other former Masters champ that might be worth a look this weekend is Fred Couples. It has been more than a decade since Couples won the green jacket in 1992, but he showed last weekend at the Shell Houston Open that he can still compete. Couples tied for third, two strokes back, last week and as a +6000 underdog this weekend would be a profitable pick if he can find some magic at Augusta."
