California One Step Closer to Having Legal Online Poker: Time Not on Industry’s Side

The California Assembly Appropriations Committee on Thursday cleared A.B. 431, a bill to legalize and regulate online poker in the state.

While this is the closest any measure has come to the legalization stage, the Poker Players Alliance acknowledged there is still a long way to go.

“Today marks another historic day for online poker in California. A second committee has cleared a bill that marks a monumental step toward providing thousands of consumers with what they need and deserve—a safe place to play poker online,” said Steven Miller, PPA’s California state director. “Even still, there is much work to be done for this bill to become law. We urge the interested stakeholders to put aside their competitive differences and work together in the best interest of all Californians. California already serves as a hub of Internet innovation and now has a unique opportunity to rise as a leader in the online poker industry, and create new jobs and needed revenue.”

While most civilized Governments on the Planet Earth utilize a 12-month yearly calendar, California is a bit different in that they only recognize nine months out of the year.  That means all bills must be passed no later than September 11, otherwise the process starts all over again in 2016.  October, November and December (also known as the 4th quarter) are not part of the California legislative calendar.

California, though not a country in and of itself, is the world’s 8th largest economy.
