While few have paid much attention to the so-called “also rans” outside of favorite American Pharoah and contenders Dortmund and Firing Line, entrants like Mr Z deserve a look if for nothing else because the payouts could prove lucrative.

Coming into the Kentucky Derby, Mr Z had finished 3rd or greater in five of his six races including a 3rd place victory at the Arkansas Derby.  He struggled at the Louisiana Derby, finishing in 9th place.

Mr Z finished 13th at this year’s Kentucky Derby and is now under new ownership. Ahmed Zayat, Mr. Z's original owner and for whom the horse is named, did not want to run him in the Preakness, saying he wanted to give Mr. Z a confidence-builder.  He sold the horse to Brad Kelley's Calumet Farm this week.

How We Follow Horse Racing Has Completely Changed

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
