A government crackdown on the European online gambling website BetClic.com has resulted in some 79 individuals having to pay thousands of dollars in fines….and this is just the beginning, authorities have warned.
Media reports indicated that fines for these players were likely to total as much as €16,000.
Belgium is the latest country to demonstrate a “no tolerance” stand towards unlicensed online gambling sites. The Government there maintains a blacklist of “forbidden” websites. There is, of course, that irony that the European Union, based out of Brussels, has condemned countries like Belgium for what is viewed as an archaic policy towards Internet gambling.
Sites like William Hill and Betfair have taken great strides in preventing their customers located in so-called “restricted” countries from playing on their respective sites.
It is unclear whether BetClic.com follows a similar policy in all forbidden jurisdictions, however, an attempt to access their website from the U.S. late Tuesday evening landed Gambling911.com on a page containing the following message:
Please note that you are attempting to access our site from a geographical location which is restricted and/or from an IP address which we block. If you have an account with us, please note that your funds are safe. You will be able to access your account normally as soon as you return to an approved geographical location and/or use a non-restricted IP address.
