Just a few idle observations from the past weekend:
* WagerHome.com customers shouldn't be convinced that any amount of punishment is going to make Jameis Winston see the light, not if he didn't understand that a suspension means that you can't suit and in pads and uniform and come onto the sideline for a game. There is something wrong psychologically with this kid, and in case he thinks that shouting expletives and stealing crab legs out of the supermarket are somehow "cute," NFL scouts do not see it that way. Winston, who was once considered a shoo-in to be the #1 choice in the draft, might be lucky to be at the tail end of the first round with the way things are going now......Oh by the way, he is due back at practice today, as coach Jimbo Fisher goes about the much more important business of maintaining the #1 spot in the polls after the life-and-death scare against Clemson.
* Bad beat of the day? My nominee is the Kansas City-Miami game, which some people had under 42.5 points at WagerHome, no doubt, and ended with a TD that put it over, as the Chiefs could have easily chosen to just take a knee.
* Speaking of that game, the boo birds are out after the Miami Dolphins' second straight 19-point loss, and not necessarily in the stands, but out of the team's own locker room. There were plenty of players who voiced their displeasure at defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle's game plan, which allowed the Chiefs 174 rushing yards and Alex Smith to escape without an interception on 19-of-25 passing. "Beyond furious" was the way the mood was described. NFL bettors note that the Dolphins (4.5-point favorites in the NFL odds this week against Oakland in London) have been down double digits at halftime in each of their first three games, and everyone knows that the scalp of head coach Joe Philbin, who took a "see no evil, hear no evil" attitude toward last year's "Bullygate," is going to bear the brunt of this.
* Am I mistaken, or have the San Francisco 49ers scored just three second-half points in three games thus far?
* Yes, I will freely admit that Blake Bortles did all his work against the Indianapolis Colts in "garbage time" (14 for 24 and 223 yards with two picks and two TD's), but he will, five years from now, be regarded as one of the four or five best quarterbacks in the NFL. For the moment, he makes the Jacksonville Jaguars much more interesting to watch, which, I guess, comes just in time for CBS to televise Jacksonville and San Diego as their lone "late" game next Sunday, where the Chargers are laying 13.5 points in the latest football odds at WagerHome.
* Alabama just doesn't stop throwing running backs at the opponent, do they? And with Blake Sims and Jason Coker, they look nicely taken care of at the quarterback position. Are the best team in the country right now? Say what you want about Lane Kiffin (and many have), but he is bring something to that Crimson Tide offense.
* After watching Mississippi State dismantle LSU - in Baton Rouge no less - and breaking a 14-game losing streak in this series, you just can't help but wonder what Wisconsin (just off 644 rushing yards against patsy Bowling Green) might have done to them if they could just pass the ball just a little.
* When someone named Lorenzo Taliaferro can gain 91 yards on the ground, what the hell do the Baltimore Ravens need Ray Rice for?
* How long before Jake Locker gets the axe and Zach Mettenberger gets the chance to fail as the Tennessee Titans' quarterback? Or (swallow hard) Charlie Whitehurst? Relief isn't coming this next week either, as the Titans are underdogs by a full touchdown to the Indianapolis Colts, according to the latest odds at WagerHome.com.
* And finally, we know that the Cleveland Browns are 1-2 at the moment, but do you think there is any team in the league that is licking its chops to play these guys right now? They have a bye this week, so no one will have to.
