If you are a bookie in the Denver area, you’ll want to check out RiNo Beer Garden, Highland Tavern, Occidental and Whiskey Tango Fox Trot in 2024.  It was just a decade ago that the BarBets app was introduced to patrons to place wagers on various sporting events.  Back then, sports betting was not regulated in Colorado.  Today it is. Let's take a walk down Memory Lane to see how it worked ten years ago when only local bookies and offshore sportsbooks took bets from those in the state.

BarBets App Wasn't That Much Fun

Oh, but there is a catch.

All wagers are “no money”.  All winnings are paid out in the form of discounts on food and drinks as well as monthly prizes like StubHub gift cards.

Ted Gantzer and Nick Peters founded the BarBets app after plenty of fighting with Apple until the mega technologies company finally caved.  In addition to iTunes, BarBets is also available in the Google Play stores.

"It's all of our hobbies and vices thrown into an app," Gantzer said. "We like bars, gambling and sports."

Bookies Still Dominant in 2024

Denver area bookies are likely to swarm upon local sports bars and pool halls regardless of whether real money sports betting apps are readily available today.

The reason: Bookies extend credit while affording their clientele anonymity.

Due to the state's mountainous terrain, geolocation software can tend to be glitchy at times.

None of the Colorado regulated apps take bets on novelties or politics.  Pay Per Head software platforms like AcePerHead also provide their clients a live dealer casino and full horse racing book, all from a single account.

Colorado residents love their sports betting with Denver teams represented in all four of the professional sports leagues including the Avalanche in Hockey (using the state name), Nuggets in the NBA and Rockies in Baseball.  The Avalanche, in particular, has enjoyed recent success, topping the Western Conference last season.

The Denver Nuggets were the reigning NBA champs in 2024.
