Uruguayan footballer Luis Suarez has finally apologized for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during a group stage elimination match that saw Uruguay advance but ultimately lose.

The Uruguayans were knocked out in the Round of 16 by Colombia.  They played without Suarez, who has been suspended from playing for four months.

In addition to not being able to play in the World Cup, Suarez also lost his lucrative sponsorship deal with 888 Poker.

"I deeply regret what occurred," said the 27-year-old Liverpool striker.

"I apologise to Giorgio Chiellini and the entire football family," said a statement on Suarez's official Twitter account.

"I vow to the public there will never again be another incident like," he added.

Chiellini, who said the ban was excessive, reacted quickly to Suarez's apology.

"It's all forgotten. I hope FIFA will reduce your suspension," he tweeted.

This was not the first time Suarez had bitten an opposing player however.

He has previously served a seven-game ban for biting a player in November 2010 then went on to bit Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic while playing for Liverpool in April 2013.  For that incident he served a 10-game suspension.

Suarez also made racial comments towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra during a Premier League game in October 2011 and was banned for eight matches.
