While the British bookies may be the only folks thrilled to see England eliminated from this year’s FIFA World Cup, Wayne Rooney’s single goal against Uruguay still proved to be costly.

More than 65% of the backing on the England v. Uruguay match was going towards England.  Hundreds of thousands of dollars were also bet on the Brits to win the World Cup outright.  England’s loss proved to be bittersweet to the bookies.

That’s because £10million was also bet at Ladbrokes on striker Wayne Rooney to score a goal against Uruguay. Coming into this matchup, Rooney had never scored a goal in a World Cup.  He finally did so in an equalizer that brought the score to 1-1 before Luis Suarez scored a second goal for Uruguay.

‘England fans have given Wayne the ultimate vote of confidence – he will carry more cash to break his World Cup duck than ever before,’ said a Ladbrokes spokesman.

It just wasn’t enough to carry his team out of the Group stage however.

24 million were expected to have watched this game in Great Britain.
