This is expected to be a heavily wagered on matchup thanks to what should be a strong USA backing.  Not surprisingly, nearly 86% of bets being taken by the North American facing online sportsbooks are on Team USA, up from 80% over the weekend.

Ghana still was favored at books like BetOnline at +145 for a potential payout of US$14.50 for every US$10 wagered.  USA would pay out US$20 for every US$10 bet.  The Draw pays $23.50 for every US$10 bet.

Among Ghaha’s strengths: A solid midfield and top stars in Captain Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari.

Essien, in particular, is not in the same form he demonstrated in the last World Cup when Ghana beat team USA.  The defense also has holes.

Among American’s strengths:  They do have a talented roster led by Tim Howard. Michael Bradley has dominated in USA Major League Soccer so far.

Despite the controversial comments made by Manager Jurgen Klinsmann that the Americans simply cannot win the World Cup, the German is a major strength for Team USA.  After all, as manager of the German team in 2006, he led them to a 3rd place World Cup finish.

USA certainly has the ability to beat Ghana as they seek to avenge their last World Cup loss to this African team.   They have a top scorer in Landon Donovan.  No American player has ever scored more goals than Donovan’s 57.

There’s just one problem: Donovan won’t be playing.  He’s been left out of the entire tournament.

And like Ghana, USA lacks in its defense.

Prior to yesterday, the Americans loss vs. Costa Rica raised eyebrows.  Then the Ticos demolished Uruguay. Still, USA did lose to the likes of Jamaica and Honduras.

Matt Jones of the Bleacher Report offered up this prediction for Ghana vs. USA:

That incisiveness will give Ghana the edge in this one. The United States have been in fine form in the buildup to this tournament, but they’ll be facing a better calibre of opponent against the Black Stars. The direct, raw abilities of Boateng and the Ayew brothers will be too much for the U.S. back line, especially when Ghana counterattack.

They just look like a more capable, rounded outfit than the United States at the moment, who are still in transition under Klinsmann. Expect a tight game but a narrow Ghana victory.
