New Jersey state Senator Raymond Lesniak (D-Union) is set to introduce new legislation that would allow residents of jurisdictions where online gambling is legal outside the US to play with individuals based inside of New Jersey. The official announcement was slated for 10:30 am EST Thursday.
The move would help create a more expansive pool of players, especially with online poker where volume is most needed.
Lesniak’s announcement comes just as the state is set to launch real money online gambling within its borders next week. Residents and those physically located within New Jersey who are over the age of 21 will be able to access the websites. A trial period will commence Thursday evening.
“I have not talked to Sen. Lesniak. This took us all by surprise,” New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement Director David Rebuck said.
Lesniak was one of the co-authors of the measure to make Internet gambling for real money legal and regulated within the Garden State. Governor Chris Christie eventually signed the bill into law earlier this year.
New Jersey will be the third US state to offer real money Web gambling, following in the footsteps of Nevada and neighboring Delaware. Unlike Nevada, the Garden State will allow casino games such as blackjack and slots.
