Arizona Republican Senator John McCain was caught playing online poker on his smartphone during a Senate Subcommittee hearing to discuss possible military intervention in Syria.

“I lost thousands of dollars, “ Senator John McCain said during an interview on CNN.

He then clarified it was actually “free money”, although it took a few seconds to elaborate further.

McCain is known for his love of gambling on the Vegas Strip but few knew he actually enjoyed playing poker online.

Realizing he was caught in an awkward situation, the Senator tweeted:

Scandal! Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing - worst of all I lost!

His former state colleague in the Senate, Republican Jon Kyl, co-authored a measure that would ultimately prohibit Web poker for real money in the US.
