Pennsylvania Super Bowl: Eagles vs. Steelers

New Yorkers won't be getting their Subway series after all.  A Jets - Giants showdown in the 2009 Super Bowl looked like a strong possibility at midseason.  But the Jets came unraveled and the Giants lost this past weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles.  It was two Pennsylvania teams that won Sunday, however, prompting speculation that the Eagles will play the Steelers in the 2009 Super Bowl.

It's East vs. West essentially:  Philadelphia being on the Eastern half of the state and Pittsburgh in the far West.  Both teams enter their respective games next weekend as favorites.

"I think an Arizona-Pittsburgh matchup in the Super Bowl would be interesting for us," MGM Mirage sports book director Jay Rood told the Las Vegas Review Journal on Monday. "There are still some interesting combinations out there. Nothing classic."

The biggest potential Super Bowl draw for the sports books was a Giants-Steelers matchup. But the defending champions were knocked out Sunday.

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell is already to make a Super Bowl bet -- with himself.

"He will bet cheesesteaks to go to a Pittsburgh area senior center as well as a Pittsburgh area homeless shelter if the Steelers win and Primanti (Bros.) sandwiches to go to a Philadelphia homeless shelter and senior center if the Eagles win," said Rendell spokesman Chuck Ardo.

Asked if the governor will attend the Super Bowl if either or both Pennsylvania teams play, Ardo said, "I can't tell you whether the governor is going but I think it's critical that his press aide get a ticket."

The Eagles were a -3 road favorite to beat the Arizona Cardinals while the Steelers opened as the -5 ½ favorite hosting the Baltimore Ravens at Super Book.

The Hilton posted the AFC as a 3-point favorite over the NFC in Super Bowl XLIII on Feb. 1 at Tampa, Fla.
