The New Jersey Assembly on Monday passed a bill that would legalize online gambling for the state’s nearly 9 million residents. A final vote is due in the state Senate on Thursday. Governor Chris Christie has up to 45 days in which to sign the bill once it comes out of Senate.
The final vote was 48 yes, 24 no and 4 abstain.
New Jersey is looking to become only the third state in the US to legalize some form of Internet gambling following the lead of Nevada and Delaware. They are also looking to actively pursue multi-state compacts similar to that of the Lottery system’s Powerball model.
All businesses accepting real money bets would be licensed and based out of Atlantic City.
