Perhaps challenger Richard Tisei is saving the best for last but Thursday night’s first debate in Massachusetts 6th Congressional contest made no mention of incumbent Democrat John Tierney’s affiliation to an offshore sports betting enterprise.

Tisei, who would become the first openly gay Republican to serve in Congress with a win this November, had threatened to bring up the topic following a firestorm over the past couple of months.

Tierney’s wife, Patrice, served as an accountant for her brothers betting company based out of Antigua.   She also served thirty days behind bars and remains on probation.

Tierney said he believed that his relatives — Robert and Daniel Eremian — were running a legitimate online gambling business until authorities told him that their Sports Off Shore operation was breaking the law.  Sports Off Shore was one of the first licensed offshore gambling companies in Antigua, serving mostly customers from the US.

Tierney has also stated that monies derived from the offshore betting business, a total of $200,000, were never reported as income.  The multiple-terms Congressman insists such funds were a gift and not subject to reporting.
