While he’s not entirely optimistic about getting it done, New Jersey State Senator Raymond Lesniak tells Natalie Rydstrom of SBR News he’s hoping to have his Internet gambling bill on Governor Chris Christie’s desk by the end of June (2012).

Lesniak admitted he’s not so sure where Christie stands right now but suggested that the Governor might be more willing to support his legislation in the fall, after the GOP Convention.

Governor Christie’s first and foremost concern is his national political ambitions unfortunately, and not for the State of New Jersey. The Governor has gotten cold feet on supporting internet gambling after signaling he would support it a few months ago. As you may recall, a year ago he vetoed my legislation in the State of New Jersey. Quite honestly, I’m not sure where he stands right now. My intent is to get a bill on his desk by the end of June.”

On the expected time-frame of sports betting installation in Atlantic City casinos, Senator Lesniak added the following: “The Governor has signaled that he wants to wait until the fall to act on this, which not coincedentally is after the Republican National Convention.”

Lesniak reiterated that New Jersey residents would be able to gamble online from the comfort of their own homes, just not on sports.  He made it clear that the federal government would have to lift a current ban on sports wagering before that could happen.  Christie has already stated he supports legalized sports betting from Atlantic City casinos and hopes to have sportsbooks operational by the new NFL season.

Likewise, commercial properties such as Internet cafes would not be permitted to promote Web gambling on their premises.
