Sportsbook.com Line: Gustafsson -225, Silva +175

Despite a bit of a hiatus for UFC, the Octagon returns April 14 on Fuel TV headlined by Alexander Gustafsson battling Thiago Silva in a light heavyweight bout. Silva replaces Antonio Rogerio Nogueira who was forced to pull out with a knee injury.

This is Silva’s first bout since being caught for a false urine sample. This resulted in a no-contest in his most recent fight against Brandon Vera, one he originally won via unanimous decision. Before that he lost in a decision to Rashad Evans and beat Keith Jardine with a tenacious knockout. At 6-foot-5, Gustafsson has won four fights in a row and holds four inches over Silva. In his 14 career bouts, he has allowed fights to reach a decision just once—he wins often and he wins early. Even as a favorite, play on him to do just that against Silva who will need time to shake off the rust returning to face such high-level competition.

Although not all of Gustafsson’s wins have been over the best of the best, he has shown the ability to beat the sport’s top competitors with victories over combatants such as Matt Hamill. He knocked Hamill out in the second round, and none of his past four fights have reached the third. The aggressive stand-up fighter has won nine of his 13 fights via knockout while proving deft at submissions to control his opponents. A Jiu-Jitsu master, look for Gustafsson to win this fight against Silva early.

Silva in tip-top form would give Gustafsson a scare in this one, but after a year’s layoff it is tough to imagine him being in such shape. While a similar threat to win via knockout, with 11 of his 14 career wins coming that way, he has struggled with two losses in his past three bouts before the no-contest. The height disadvantage could prove costly for Silva in this one, possibly limiting his strike-heavy attacking style that benefits from his aggression.
