Illinois became the first state to begin selling lottery tickets online Sunday.

Lottery officials claim that the online sales will help bolster the state’s struggling economy, making lottery tickets easier to purchase.

Online lottery sales received federal approval this past December when the US Justice Department reversed its opinion regarding Internet gambling whereby a 1960’s Wire Act will only be applied to sports wagering.  Some states are looking to enhance their online gambling platform with Web poker and casino games.

In some Canadian provinces, the lottery commission oversees all Internet gambling activity including poker and US states could look to follow a similar model, which might also be enhanced through multi-state compacts.
