The PGA season tees off with a winner’s-only event in Hawaii. Par-73 Kapalua will once against host the Friday-to-Monday tournament, so expect par breakers aplenty. Here’s a look at the top five bets to open 2012 with a win…

Webb Simpson (8/1): He finished 2011 as well as anyone, recording his first two career wins after mid-August. He’ll be making his debut at the Hyundai, but after leading the Tour in All-Around Ranking and Par Breakers (24.26%) a year ago, he’ll be the favorite this weekend.

David Toms (20/1): Toms hasn’t made it to Maui since 2007, but he has four top-10’s in his six career starts at Kapalua. He was third on the Tour in All-Around Ranking a year ago and should have what it takes to at least hang around on Monday.

Jonathan Byrd (25/1): These are pretty bettor-friendly odds for the defending champion, who beat Robert Garrigus in a two-hole playoff in Maui a year ago. Byrd has broken par in 15 of his 16 career rounds at Kapalua.

Gary Woodland (15/1): With wide fairways and big greens, length is usually rewarded at Kapalua, and Woodland can crush it as well as anyone in this field (fifth on the Tour in driving distance last season, 310.5). He birdied 49.3% of his Par-5’s a year ago, 13th-best on the Tour. He finished 2011 strong, with top-20’s in six of his final eight Tour events.

Rory Sabbatini (25/1): Sabbatini has been close at Kapalua twice, finishing runner-up in 2001 and 2010. He also had a T13 in 2007 among his five career starts in Maui.
