Gambling News: Bill Will Allow Pari-mutuels to Become Casinos in South Florida

Revisions to a bill that would bring destination casinos to South Florida would now allow for existing pari-mutuels like racetracks and jai-alai frontons to become full fledged casinos.

Sen. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale, sent fellow Florida legislators a draft of tweaks to her bill, based on feedback gleaned from two major workshops held on the issue in Tallahassee, she said.

Washington DC Internet Gambling:  No More Federal Threat – With word that the US Justice Department will no longer apply online poker to a 1960’s Wire Act, states and the District of Colombia now have the green light to move forward with plans to implement legalized Web poker, though, in the case of Washington, DC., there are other hurdles to cross.  The program’s implementation through the D.C. Lottery has stalled while officials fully vet the program through community meetings and council hearings. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear Wants Gambling - Next to the budget, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear’s biggest issue to push will be a state constitutional amendment allowing for expanded gambling in the Commonwealth.  A similar gambling measure failed during his first term in office.  It will be interesting to see if Beshear goes the “online” route since he was one of the first to attempt a seizure of several dozen Web gambling domains some years ago.  The Governor’s Journal addresses Beshear’s plans here>>>>

Bet365 Sees 58 Percent Increase in Wagers – The British-based online bookmaker, Bet365, reports £91m profit despite shouldering losses from Stoke City FC.  The company had takings for the year to 31 March rising 22% to £501m – a turnover almost as large as online grocer Ocado – as bets rose 58%.  Read More here>>>>
