Riots that spread over the past few days throughout Great Britain have left approximately 50 bookmaker shops damaged.  While some had their windows smashed, others were set on fire.

Shops throughout London, Liverpool and Birmingham were forced to shut down due to threats of violence.

Ladbrokes' public affairs manager Richard Royal said on Tuesday: "Our first concern is to ensure the safety of staff and customers, and as such we took the decision to keep a number of shops closed throughout London today."

Satellite Information Services (SIS) had to evacuate its office on Corsham Street in Central London, leaving viewers of Newton Abbot and Ffos Las with pictures and commentary but no graphics.

The riots were sparked by a police shooting of a 29-year-old man, Mark Duggan, while he was a passenger in a cab.  Initial accounts suggested police officers shot Duggan execution style in the head.  The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has called such allegations “categorically untrue”.
