Supporters of legalizing Internet poker are hopeful that a fall deficit deal could provide the perfect forum for their efforts.
Two bills addressing legalized online poker were introduced in Washington over the past few months. Proponents for the industry claim that the industry would bring substantial federal revenue and jobs.
Congressman Jared Polis, a Colorado Democrat advocating for the legalization of Internet gambling and medical marijuana, had his spokesperson, Chris Fitzgerald, speak with GamblingCompliance.com.
“The joint committee will be the whole ballgame for a deficit deal this fall,” said Fitzgerald.
Polis estimates taxation of Internet gambling could yield an additional $42bn in federal revenue over ten years.
“It’s not a take-it-or-leave-it proposition,” Fitzgerald said. “Congressman Polis is just trying to get people to think outside the box when it comes to raising revenue without raising taxes.”
