Tommy Wells, District of Columbia Ward 6 Councilman, told NewsChannel 8 he is determined to repeal a controversial provision that would bring online poker to the nation’s capital.

Following Chairman Kwame Brown stripping Wells of his position as the powerful transportation committee, the councilman decided to go on a crusade against online gambling in Washington, D.C..

On Tuesday, Wells said he'll try to repeal the online gambling provision when the council returns this fall because "it didn't go through a public process." The measure authorizing D.C. Lottery to create the gambling program was slipped into a budget bill in December, dodging a public hearing.

The District of Columbia has become the first jurisdiction in the United States to legalize the activity.  However, the D.C. Lottery announced it will be delaying plans to implement the new law.

Only those residing or visiting the nation’s capital would be permitted to play, but for a limited stake.
