A South Korean webmaster has been accused of orchestrating denial of service attacks against online gambling websites that refused to pay for his services.

The suspect – named only as Lee, 32 – was arrested along with alleged hacking accomplice – Park, 37 – over a series of denial of service attacks between 21 November and 15 December last year. The attacks were allegedly authorised by local gangsters who handled the business side of the illegal gambling sites hosted by Lee's firm. Four alleged members of an Incheon-based organised crime operation have also been indicted in the case, the Korea Times reports.
Denial of service attacks (also known as DDoS) involve sending packets of useless traffic to a targeted website in hopes of flooding bandwidth capacity. These attacks were common in the online gambling sector during the first half of the last decade until new technology helped bring about a reduction. Culprits were also apprehended in Russia after attacks were lodged against some of the United Kingdom’s largest Internet gambling websites, including William Hill.
In the South Korean case, prosecutors allege that an underworld organization rented access to 50,000 compromised machines as a means of launching the attacks.
