Following in the footsteps of other major online bookmakers like William Hill, the world’s largest betting exchange, Betfair, is said to be considering a move offshore in order to avoid exorbitant UK taxes.

A spokesman said: "If there is no movement on [the regulation of offshore bookmakers] the team has to make sure it has the right contingencies to run the business effectively. No decision has been taken on offshore."

The company recently set up an office in Dublin, which will employ around 100 people.

The company says of this new office that it will "provide the Betfair Group with additional flexibility as the regulatory environment evolves".

Betfair is planning a £1.48bn floatation.  – Aaron Goldstein, Gambling911.com Business
