Phins Down
There’s nothing to match the overreaction of NFL observers, fans, and bettors after the first week of the season. Teams are anointed and teams are abolished (relegated if possible) just because of how they performed against NFL game odds.
In the case of the Miami Dolphins, the latter seems to be in order. Miami lost, 33-8, in its opener at Indianapolis as the Colts raced to a 30-0 lead just after halftime. Using ‘ugly’ as an adjective wouldn’t suffice. Miami was outgained nearly 2-1 (418-211), equally futile on the ground and in the passing game.
It was a retread quarterback in Daniel Jones who led the Colts to a first opening-game win in a league-worst dozen seasons. It’s not whether Jones is this good; that’s the theme of this issue, but just exactly how bad are the Fish?
Miami had won four consecutive season openers, but minus-3 in turnovers, an awful performance by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (114 passing yards, plus two interceptions and a fumble), and several unforced errors combined to doom Miami.
‘Are the Miami Dolphins the Worst Team in the NFL?’ is the headline, and you’d be hard-pressed to disagree, at least now. This was a playoff team in both 2022 and 2023 before slipping to 8-9 last season.
Week 2 of this NFL schedule has the Dolphins as a tepid one-point favorite hosting the New England Patriots in their home opener. New England was somewhat less brutal in a 20-13 home defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders to begin this season.
This isn’t exactly the Game of the Week at Hard Rock Stadium.
As far as Super Bowl odds are concerned, New England is 100-1 (+10000), which is chintzy compared to the 150-1(+15000) offered on Miami. Those aren’t the highest numbers on the table, but they’re nonetheless lottery-esque.
Coach Mike McDaniel and his hot seat are popular when it comes to NFL news. At 1-2 (-200), he’s the prohibitive favorite to be the first dismissed coach.
Even Larry Csonka, arguably the best player in the history of the team, opined his former team was ‘unprepared, uninspired, unacceptable.’
Hardly a vote of confidence.
While the NFL schedule figures to offer more realism in the next few weeks, it doesn’t get easier if you’re the Dolphins. Immediately after the Pats, there’s a Thursday evening encounter against the Buffalo Bills (another division rival) in Orchard Park.
You don’t have to be a genius (the author is among that crowd) to see that the Fish can’t get the better of New England in NFL scores; they are presumably staring at an 0-3 hole to start the season.
These aren’t haughty times in Miami…
Does BetUS Offer Constant Updates on Super Bowl LX Betting Odds?
Indeed, it does, since nothing drives the gambling bus in nearly the way it’s driven by the NFL. BetUS is offering a plethora of NFL game odds (point spreads and props) through the 17-game regular season and conference playoffs. It concludes with Super Bowl LX betting lines.
It’s the Buffalo Bills co-favored at 13-2 (+650) with the Baltimore Ravens to win the title at this early-September writing.
Remember the board is fluid, so the best advice is always to do your homework to try and strike when the ‘odds iron’ is hot. It’s not uncommon to have the Bills favored pretty much each week in NFL betting odds.
Any Final Thoughts?
NFL rumors are a never-ending entity if you’re a bettor or fan, and the woes of the Miami Dolphins are a favorite subject at least through the early portion of the season.
