Your Ultimate Guide to Visiting Flemington Racecourse
Before heading to Flemington racecourse, we recommend that you familiarise yourself with the dress code, public transport, and parking options. Doing so will ensure you have a smooth journey and an enjoyable experience, without worrying about ticket prices or where to eat. We have compiled the main factors you need to consider before visiting Flemington to ensure you get the most out of your day.
Book your tickets in advance
Check the raceday calendar to find the race you want to attend. There are many different races throughout the year and the Melbourne Cup carnival provides a race day for everyone. When you are choosing your race day, we recommend booking your tickets in advance. This guarantees your entry to your chosen race and allows you to add any extras like hospitality packages.
Plan your journey
Flemington is pretty easy to access, but we do recommend planning your journey in advance. The carparks, roads, and public transport can get busy, especially on popular race days, so we recommend allowing additional time to ensure you get to see your race.
Parking
Flemington has dedicated members' parking available, which can be reserved with an annual pass. They also offer unreserved parking, but this is on a first-come, first-served basis, so you will need to arrive early to grab a space. Public parking is also available via the Epsom Road entrance.
Trains
You can use trains from Southern Cross Train Station to Flemington Racecourse on all race days throughout the year. Trains are the easiest way to arrive and leave the venue, but they can get busy. Typically, it will take 15 minutes to reach the City from Flemington.
Trams
You can use the No.57 tram to Flemington Drive, but this is not a suitable option for anyone with a mobility aid.
Buses
The Route 472 bus from Moonee Ponds, Footscray, and Williamstown to Fisher Place or the 404 bus from Moonee Ponds and Footscray to Smithfield Road. You will find the entrances easily from these buses, and the regular times make it easy for you to make it in time for your favourite race.
Taxis
You can also choose to take a taxi, with three taxi ranks that operate throughout the Melbourne Cup carnival. You can also choose a rideshare for drop-offs only, which can be a cheaper option than private taxis.
Check the dress code
Before you visit Flemington, you need to check the dress code. Flemington, like other race courses, has a dress code that must be followed, changing depending on the area you are visiting. To ensure you are not denied entry, check the dress code beforehand. We have outlined the key points of the dress code below, but we do recommend that you check directly with the race course in advance in case there are any changes to the dress code.
Owners area
Owners can access thMembers’’s Enclosure, TAB Owners and Trainers Lounge, and the Mounting Yard providing they follow the dress code for the members’ enclosure. You will need to maintain a suitable standard, and ensure that any of the non-permitted clothing items are not worn.
Corporate hospitality and dining
When visiting the dining and corporate hospitality, you will need to ensure you meet the dress code. For gentlemen over the age of 1,2 this includes tailored slacks with a blazer or sports coat, a shirt, tie, and dress shoes. Tailored chinos or shorts are also permitted, provided they stop on or below the knee.
For ladies, a suitable standard of racewear attire is needed. Shorts, short suits, or playsuits that are above the knee are not permitted, along with any garments that expose your belly button. Children under 12 should be neatly dressed and accompanied by an adult at all times.
Members enclosure
The Members Enclosure has a dress code that must be followed in these areas:
- The Birdcage
- Members car parks
- The Members Betting Ring
- Members Lawn
- The Club Stand
- The Grandstand
Gentlemen are required to wear tailored pants or a suit, including tailored chinos or leather pants. Any tailored shorts must sit on or below the knee and should be paired with a blazer or sports coat, collared dress shirt with a tie or bow tie and dress shoes.
Ladies will need to maintain a dress standard and should be dressed smartly. For both ladies and gentlemen, the following are not permitted:
- Playsuits or shorts above the knee
- Garments with an open back below the waist
- Garments that show your midriff (including bralettes and crop tops)
- Torn or ripped clothing
- Jeans
- Tracksuits
- Sports shoes
- Leggings worn as pants

- The Furphy Deck
- Hill Stand
- The Park
- TAB Saintly Place Sports Bar
- The Front Lawn
Check your dining options
Once you have decided when you want to visit, we recommend checking your dining options and making reservations. During carnivals and popular races, dining options can fill up quickly, so by booking your place, you can avoid disappointment. Your food options vary depending on whether you choose the public or members' areas, with different restaurants and bars.
Most dining options open at 11.45 am and will remain open all day unless stated otherwise. When choosing hospitality or premium dining, you will need to book in advance.
