There are a few good reasons to bet on Destin whose odds were fluctuating between 12-1 and 14-1 odds, right there with Brody’s Cause and Creator.

Destin set the track record at the Tampa Bay Derby.

Destin’s number 9 starting position is not ideal. The number 9 starting position horse has won nine of eighty-two starts but none since 1999.

Famed trainer Todd Pletcher expressed some concern over this starting position for Destin.

“I’m OK with the nine for Destin. The only thing that concerns me is the horse inside Destin (Lani, the Japanese representative).  I have some concern about that horse acting up.”

Lani has a reputation for being somewhat aggressive.

Another potential obstacle for Destin is his rather lengthy layover.

That might not be a bad thing, as Alicia Wincze Hughes of the Lexington Herald-Leade points out:

If the past decade has proven anything, it’s that some previously hard and fast Kentucky Derby rules were made to be broken. Where a five-week layoff was once considered an automatic bet against, four Kentucky Derby winners — Barbaro (2006), Big Brown (2008), Mine That Bird (2009) and Orb (2013) — have pulled off that feat in the last 10 years.
