The number two post has resulted in seven wins in Kentucky Derby history but zero since 1999.

Donnie Von Hemel (trainer) didn’t seem bothered by the starting position.

“It's good with us. He's surrounded by horses with similar running styles and shouldn't get shuffled back,” Von Hemel said.  “He should be able to get comfortable from there."

SuddenBreakingNews won the Grade 3, $500,000 Southwest in February, finished fifth as the favorite in the Grade 2, $900,000 Rebel in March, and shot back with a second place in the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby.

Von Hemel, now 54, has gone on to establish himself as one of the Midwest’s most respected horsemen.  This will be only his second horse to run the Kentucky Derby following a three decades absence.  His first entry, Clever Trevor, finished 13th in the 1989 Kentucky Derby.

“The whole family is overjoyed,” said Von Hemel’s father, Don Von Hemel, the 81-year-old trainer based at Prairie Meadows.

“It means the world to us,” added trainer Kelly Von Hemel, Donnie’s 51-year-old brother. “I’m very excited for him because I think he’s really got a legitimate chance to win the race or at least run a really good race.”
