Rain chances had increased to 50% for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes race.  That’s great news for favorite American Pharoah (priced at -125), the only entrant that has a proven record for running in the slop.

Because the expected storms are expected to be scattered, it’s doubtful we will know the track conditions until the immediate hours leading up to the 6:30 pm EST race.

"If it rains, we know American Pharoah loves the mud," trainer Bob Baffert said, alluding to the colt's 6 1/4-length 2015 debut victory in the slop at Oaklawn Park in the Rebel Stakes (gr. II). "I don't know about Dortmund."

The forecast for Saturday afternoon storms has hovered between 30% and 40% all week.  The 50% chance of rain forecast as of Friday afternoon was the highest percentage given yet.

How We Follow Horse Racing Has Completely Changed

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
