BOSTON (Associated Press) — Massachusetts gambling regulators say they'll entertain proposals from anyone interested in keeping the thoroughbred racing industry alive at Suffolks Downs after New England's last remaining track closes.

The annual deadline for state racing licenses is still Oct.1, but the Massachusetts Gaming Commission said Thursday that it will accept "placeholder" plans that need more time to be developed.

The panel also said it will find ways to assist affected workers, including possibly re-directing money designated to boost race prizes.

Meanwhile, state labor officials will begin offering job training and other employment services to Suffolk Downs workers.

The nearly 80-year-old track's closing comes after its partner, Mohegan Sun, lost its bid for a state casino license last week.

Live racing will end Oct. 4. Betting on televised races will be offered until December.

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
