Lani Post Position Draw Eight Odds – 2016 Kentucky Derby

Lani post position draw landed him in the number eight post position with 30-1 odds.

This is perhaps one of the best post positions with eight wins in eighty-five starts at close to a 10 percent winning percentage.  Two wins have been recorded since 1999.

Mikio Matsunaga (trainer) – “It was a good draw, ideal. The middle was ideal so I have no complaints about drawing number eight.”

Lani comes to us via Japan and is the winner of the Grade 2 UAE Derby.

There are some major problems with Lani not taking direction.

“He likes to get into a strong gallop by himself,” exercise rider Eishu Maruuchi said. “He doesn’t want the rider to push him forward.”

The Kentucky-bred Lani has three victories in six starts for earnings of $1,366,618 for his owner, Koji Maeda.

Mike Watchmaker, national handicapper for Daily Racing Form, told the New York Times he doubts that Lani is in the mold of the Venezuelan horse Canonero II, a seemingly impossible long shot who won the Derby in 1971. He described the misbehaving Lani as “the rankest of outsiders.”
