Kentucky Derby 2010: The Contenders and The Pretenders

The Kentucky Derby 2010 is just days away and the bets are already pouring in.

Last year's winner, Mine That Bird, was among the biggest long shots to win in Derby.  The payout was astronomical.  Some books had him paying $7000 for every $100 bet.

American Lion - This horse is a Kentucky Derby 2010 contender with odds at SBG Global set at +1800 or 18/1.  American Lion won the Illinois Derby just a few weeks ago.

Lookin at Lucky - He is the current Kentucky Derby 2010 favorite at +300 odds for a payout potential of $300 on every $100 bet.  He won the Rebel Stakes on March 13th and came in third in the Santa Anita Derby on April 3rd.

Endorsement - This horse won the Grade 3 $800,000 Sunland Derby on March 28th.  SBG Global did not post odds on Endorsement as of Tuesday night.

Awesome Act - He just moved into single digit odds territory at SBG Global, which listed Awesome Act at +950 odds to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby.  He was around 15/1.  His victory came at Aqueduct's Gotham Stakes.

Dublin - He is trying to squeeze into the single digits but at press time sat with +1200 odds. Dublin has earned $373,208 this year in three starts all at Oaklawn Park.

Noble's Promise - He was currently at +1150.  Noble's Promise must overcome some injuries before he is a serious contender.  It's tough for us to back an injured horse.

Mission Impazible - On March 27th, Mission Impazible came in first at the Louisiana Derby.  He was listed with +1250 odds.

Sidney's Candy - Kentucky Derby 2010 odds had him at +500. Sidney's Candy won the first Grade I of his career when he wired the field in the 2010 Santa Anita Derby, winning by four and a half lengths under jockey Joe Talamo. It was the first Santa Anita Derby victory for Talamo and Southern California-based trainer John W. Sadler.

Knowing that last year's Kentucky Derby winner was such a huge long shot, there are a few potential "pretenders in disguise" in waiting that would pay out in a huge way.

Pleasant Prince and Prince Will I Am would each pay $10,000 for every $100 bet, assuming they get into the Derby to begin with, which they probably will not.

First Dude would pay out $12500.

Distorted Dave would pay $9500.

Call Shot would pay $7500.

Kettle River would pay $7500.

Pulsion would pay $9000.

Tempted to Tapit would pay $7350.

Yawanna Twist would also pay $7350.

How We Follow Horse Racing Has Completely Changed

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
